Research for children and young people with emotional difficulties
Information for young people aged 11 to 15 years
The CAMHS team are doing research to find out how best to help people when they are referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
We are asking you to help with this research.
We need 1210 children and young people like you to help with our research.
We will ask an adult to take part in the research with you. This might be your Mum or Dad, or another adult who looks after you (e.g., a grandparent). In the rest of this leaflet we will call them your ‘parent/carer’.
Reading this information will tell you all you need to know and what to expect if you choose to take part in this research. If you have any other questions, we can answer these when we speak to your parent/carer and you about the research.
1. Why is this study important?
Lots of children and young people experience difficulties, such as feeling sad or anxious, or having worries. Sometimes these difficulties can make you upset and might affect how you get on at home and school or with friends. It can sometimes take a long time to get help.
2. What would we like to know?
We would like to collect a bit of extra information about young people when they are referred to CAMHS. We want to find out whether collecting this extra information (using a questionnaire) helps with understanding their difficulties and offering the right help.
3. Do I have to help?
You can decide whether or not to help with this research.
If you decide to help now but change your mind later, that is fine too. You can stop taking part at any time.
4. What will I have to do if I help?
If you agree to help we will ask you and your parent/carer some questions about your mood and feelings. This will happen when you join the research study and again after 6 and 12 months so we can find out how you are getting on.
If you complete the questionnaires, you will receive an e-voucher as a thank you for your time taking part in the study.
Half of the young people who take part and their parent/carer will also be asked to complete an extra questionnaire called the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA). The results of the DAWBA will be given to their parent/carer and to the CAMHS team.
5. What happens if I don’t want to answer the questions?
If you change your mind and don’t want to answer any questions, that is ok. Taking part in this research is your decision.
If you are unsure at any stage then please speak to your parent/carer about how you are feeling.
6. Is there anything else I should know?
Any information we collect about you will remain confidential, this means we will not share it with people who are not working on the study.
The information will also be anonymous, which means we do not use your name.
If you have any questions or feel upset about taking part, you should speak to your parent/carer.
